The Social Justice dashboard speaks to five domains:

  • Evaluator
  • Facilitator
  • Collaborator
  • Advocate
  • Change agent

Each of these domains represents an embodiment that students must master in order to become well-rounded counselors. Though the Online M.Ed. in Counseling coursework is designed to address each of these domains, many students are drawn to or more proficient in a particular domain—and that’s okay.

We encourage students to try to improve in areas where they appear to be deficient. We also applaud students who discover a particular strength and work to reinforce their skills in that area. The dashboard tracks your competency development and updates your domain ranking based on your actions.

How to Use the Dashboard
The dashboard allows you to take ownership of your online degree. By providing a clear visual of your strengths and weaknesses, you can shape your education to fit your career goals. You can seek mentorship in areas where you need help, or participate in additional out-of-class activities in areas where you thrive. So when it comes time to apply for counseling jobs, you’ll be able to succinctly articulate your strengths to potential employers.

Throughout your time in your online counseling degree program, you will visit the dashboard to do the following:

  • Evaluate your out-of-class activities and experiences, which you will tailor to your personal and professional goals
  • Request feedback from your mentors within or outside the program
  • View your program roadmap, explore course information and determine which skills you are building in each class
  • Submit three required personal reflections about transformative experiences

Guiding Social Justice Principles

Our esteemed faculty curated five social justice principles* that every graduate of William & Mary’s counseling program should uphold:

  1. Values and advocates for the rights and well-being of socially disadvantaged or devalued people
  2. Demonstrates openness to change, self-evaluation and self-transcendence
  3. Embraces redistribution of power and resources, as well as recognition of cultural differences to facilitate change
  4. Applies equity, access, participation and harmony when evaluating needs of clients in order to develop interventions and programmatic responses that are comprehensive in scope and preventive in design
  5. Exhibits critical awareness of oppression, exclusion and marginalization that may have been experienced by their clients and works collaboratively for change

Mapped to standards of our accrediting body, the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), these principles inspire our curriculum and cement our unwavering commitment to incorporating social justice and advocacy in counseling education.
