Description: The Addictions Counseling course is designed to provide a hands-on approach to addictions counseling and substance abuse disorders. In order to properly counsel clients with substance abuse disorders, students must understand the issues these clients face on a daily basis. This course provides that experience through the use of a virtual addictions counseling center and an abstinence project.
Students enrolled in Addictions Counseling will learn about addiction treatment and counseling approaches, treatment issues, legal and ethical issues, screening and assessment for addiction, and addiction counseling approaches with groups, individuals, and families. The course will also focus on providing students with a basic knowledge of Motivational Interviewing (MI). Students will gain a working understanding of these topics and, provided they have completed other relevant counseling courses, will also be prepared to begin supervised experiential training with clients who have substance abuse and addiction concerns.
